Both of these conditions most commonly affect the lower eyelid and are often caused by age-related changes to the eyelid. In ectropion, the eyelid turns outward away from the eye. In entropion, the eyelid turns inward, and the lashes rub the surface of the eye. Both can cause many symptoms including irritation, dryness, scratching, watering, or redness of the eye.

How are Ectropion and Entropion Treated?

These conditions can be fixed with surgery in an outpatient facility. Surgery involves tightening the eyelid in the outer corner often combined with extra stitches depending on the exact problem and its severity.

Expect bruising and swelling after surgery, a majority of which resolves within 2 weeks. Patients must avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 1 week after surgery. Patients may return to work typically within 5-7 days.
